It was our second day in Costa Rica. The night before, we had arrived through mist and rain, our headlights glinting off wet palm leaves as we wound our way to the hotel nestled at the jungle’s edge. The air had been thick and fragrant—earth, orchids, and the faint tang of volcanic stone. We had come to see Mt. Arenal, the legendary volcano that watched over this lush, mountainous land.

At dawn, I woke to a soft drumming on the roof. For a moment, I worried the clouds would hide everything. I rose quietly and opened the wide wooden shutters of our cabin. A breath of warm, damp air slipped inside, carrying the sound of dripping leaves and distant birdsong. As the mist thinned, I saw it—Arenal’s perfect cone, dark and brooding, rising through the canopy like a slumbering giant.

The jungle around me was alive. Toucans called from the treetops, their cries echoing through the valley. Ferns and palms glistened under the faint light, every leaf jeweled with dew. Steam curled gently from the volcano’s upper slopes, ghostlike against the pale morning sky. I could almost feel the pulse of the earth beneath my feet, ancient and steady.

I set up my camera on the deck. The light shifted from gray to gold as the clouds began to break, brushing the mountain with soft warmth. I pressed the shutter and captured that first magical glimpse—Arenal revealed, the jungle awakening, and the promise of the day ahead. It felt like the world itself was breathing again.
