From there, we rented a car and began the final two-hour drive north, the road slowly narrowing as pavement gave way to gravel. Fatigue lingered, but anticipation sharpened every sense. As we carefully eased up the gravel road toward our safari lodge, I slowed almost instinctively. There it was—standing impossibly tall beside the road, its patterned neck rising against the sky. A second giraffe grazed calmly on acacia scrub nearby, utterly unbothered by our quiet arrival. The scene stopped time. Dust hung in the warm air, cicadas buzzed softly, and the vastness of the South African savannah stretched out in every direction.
